The Arrow on right indicates the direction of travel as I-52 made contact with the bottom. The tin ingots are packed very tightly on the pressure hull. As I-52 began to slow down and stop, the ingots, each ingot weighing 100 pounds continued to move in the direction of travel, toward the bow but slight to port.

OPERATION RISING SUN

This photo below shows Paul Tidwell in Mir 2 preparing to retrieve a tin ingot off the top of the pressure hull.

If you look closely you will notice how the ingots were laid across the hull in perfect order, each ingot weighing approximately 100 pounds. In addition, if you examine how the support braces were bent out of place. This was caused by the impact, indicating the submarine hit bottom while moving forward at the same time.
